I'm Back!

Wow - I didn't realize how long it had been since I've posted anything on here.

I'd like to say I've been doing something really important, but I haven't been.

I've been sucked into the world of on-line socializing called Facebook.

Now, it has been a good thing in that I have reconnected with my best friends from high school. And not just on-line. We have gone out for breakfast and dinner, and have a lunch planned for two weeks. So it's not just been on on-line connection.

I've also reconnected with my estranged fathers family: my cousins, and aunts. That is important to me so it is another good thing that has come from Facebook.

I have also been a Mom in my time away. Volunteering at the kids school, doing softball and baseball practices and games, a few short vacations to our beach house and having fun with them over the summer. Now we are onto field hockey and football practices and games. I DO consider this very important.

But the whole Facebook "addiction" needs to stop. I've realized it is consuming too much time. Time away from my kids, family, and true friends. Friends who I enjoy spending time with. Friends who truly care about what I've been doing. Friends who are worth my time in seeing face to face - not facebook to facebook.

I've also realized that I cannot say a lot of what I want or need to say on Facebook. It is a very open forum which everyone I am friends with, and their friends, and so on and so on can see. A little too open.

So, I am back. Back to posting my thoughts, hopes, dreams, fears, and frustrations here. Where I have a certain degree of anonymity.

So, you'll be hearing regularly from me now. Maybe not everyday, but on a regular basis.

Til next time, I'll still be....

Panther Pride!

I need to be a proud mommy for a minute...or longer.

Drewby turned 7 in November. He joined an indoor flag football league at that time.

His league is for 7-13 year olds. (Yes - I must be crazy as he is small for his age anyway!)

His games began just after the new year, and up until this weekend, there was not much excitement to blog about.

He would go and wear his jersey, sit with the "big" boys, get his fair share of plays, run the ball a time or two, and be quite happy when his team won.

The "big" boys are really great with Drewby, explaining to him where to go and what to do (this flag football is much different rule-wise than the flag football he played outdoors in the fall).

And whether Drewby made a good run, or not-so-good run, there were high fives and pats on the back.

This weekend, Drewby had two games to play.

Saturdays game started well, and his team (Pitt Panthers) took an early lead.

As is typically the case, Drewby then got to go in on offense. He took a hand-off. And ran.

AND SCORED A TOUCHDOWN!!!!!

I was standing up in the bistro area which overlooks the field, and I was jumping up and down hooting and hollering like a crazy person!!

(The parents and kids there for the ice hockey game looked at me strangely)

He took the hand-off and it was like magic. He ran one way, saw a player, cut back the other way, and just always kept his feet moving.

I truly think his smaller size made it very hard for the "bigger" boys on the opposing team to run, bend over, and take his flag.

A little later in the game, his team tried to run Drewby again. This time, the other team had their smaller boy in (who was still several inches taller than Drewby).

The boy not only caught up with Drewby, but in grabbing for Drewby's flag they got tied up and an accidental tackle occurred.

Drewby got up, looked like he was ready to cry. But the "big" boys on his team were there asking if he was alright, and the other team's player helped him up and apologized and asked if he was okay.

Drewby walked off the field without tears.

I was so proud of him.

And he still wanted to go today and play his game.

Todays game was tough, against the #1 ranked team in their division. Drewby only got some defensive playing time. And left a touchdown score by missing coverage on his player.

He said it was because I did not let him wear his "lucky" red shorts from yesterday's game.

Although, he slept in them last night because he was still so excited about the touchdown.

I seriously hope we're not starting these sports superstitions already!!

It's Cookie Time!!

Okay, I have really been trying to stay away from the Girl Scout cookies.

Many of you may be thinking - not so hard.

Don't buy them, if you have them, just don't eat them.

Or - eat them and be done and get over it!

Not so easy.

See I am Miss M's Troop Cookie Manager.

It is a daunting position. I had to pre-order for our troop. I had as many as 80 CASES (that's like 960 boxes) of those yummy, delicious cookies in my home at one time.

Then, the girls turned in orders, which I separated and delivered to the school for pick-up. There were only maybe 8 or 9 cases left in my house.

And just when I thought I was through the worst of it - I have to go and pick up more cases today for the girls Cookie Booth tomorrow.

28 more cases.

There are Caramel Delites, Shortbreads, Thin Mints, Thanks A Lots (chocolate dipped shortbreads!), Peanut Butter Patties, all of them.

The only ones I am not so fond of - the new Daisy Go Rounds. Of course, they are reduced fat.

So I am really, really trying to steer clear of the cookies.

Will it ever end?

Oh yes - in about one month.

Wonder how long my willpower will hold out with all these cookies is my house through March 8th?!

Til next time, I'll still be...
(trying to avoid cookies, and)

Mean Girls, Part Two

You may or may not remember the trouble Miss M had with a mean girl at cheerleading this fall.

If not, this post http://beingbrenda.blogspot.com/2008/08/mean-girls-mean-girls-what-ya-gonna-do.html will remind you.

Well, to try and make a long story short - this girl ended up in class with Miss M this year.

And just before Christmas, hubby and I made a trip into the school to talk with the teacher, as the mean girl was getting physical with Miss M.

In the back of the line between classes, while walking in back of her chair in class, outisde at recess. You know, when the teacher and aides are busy elsewhere.

Now I'm not talking tripping, pushing or punching - but pressure points and unwarranted flicks and nudges.

Miss M had told this girl to leave her alone. The mean girl replied to Miss M "Shut Up" and walked away.

Anyway, since the holidays, I thought, as did Miss M, that this girl had left her alone. No more pressure points, nudges, etc.

But now, Miss M's friends have told her what this girl is saying about Miss M - behind her back.

Things like, "M has an attitude and shouldn't be allowed in Catholic school" , M is too white and fair - what's wrong with her?", and "Why does M shake her butt so much when she walks - especially up to take Communion?"

Now, I know at home Miss M can have a slight attitude. But I have never been informed of her being unpleasant by anyone - teachers, aides, other parents, students, volunteers. And I am at the school enough to know the teachers would pull me aside if this were the case.

As for Miss M shaking her butt when she walks - well maybe she does a little, but it's the way she walks all the time - not just up to Communion. And why the hell is this girl watching Miss M walk up to Communion when she should be reflecting in the sacrament she is getting ready to or has just received?!

Now for the second comment - Miss M being too white and fair. We are Irish and German. Most Irish and Germans are fair skinned. And last time I checked, this was known as being intolerant, racism. The kids are learning in school about World War II, you know the one where Hitler prosecuted the Jewish people due to their religion? And looking different. And what about when they studied the Civil War - where African Americans were sold into slavery.

Well, evidently, the teachers have had enough of the bullying that is going on in 5th grade. Miss M's class and the other 5th grade were pulled together for a 2 hour meeting with the principal.

All students who felt bullied were encouraged to give examples, without names, to the group. All students were given a piece of paper to write down the names of who was bullying them or who they have observed bullying others. The principal commented that the same FOUR names were showing on the papers and then discussed how to handle bullies. Then each student had a one on one chance to talk with the principal to discuss specifics and names.

I totally agree with this. Miss M did a good job in telling the principal what had been going on. And her friends told the principal what this girl is still saying about Miss M behind her back.

What I don't agree with is the fact the the entire 5th grade is now forced to walk between classes, to and from the lunchroom in silence. They are to get their lunches and return to their classroom to eat in silence. Then they have recess in the classroom in silence.

Why would the teachers punish the entire class instead of the four bad seeds?! I am not an educator by profession so PLEASE - someone help me to understand why this is a good method?

The school handbook has a section that deals with bullying. How it will not be tolerated.

Isn't the best way to deal with the few bullies to DEAL with the bullies?! Not punish the whole class?

Remove the bad seeds, that's what I say.

Anyhoo...that's my venting about this whole bullying situation. If anyone has any insights or comments to help me see it any other way - please share!

To Date or Not To Date...What Age?

I'm a little concerned.

Miss M is 10, almost 11 years old. She is bright, outgoing, and althletic.

She is also thoughtful, quiet, and happy.

Her idea of a wonderful weekend is playing some field hockey, practicing softball, curling up with a good book, playing with her American Girl dolls, and on a great weekend - having (or going to) a girlfriend over.

I recently was talking with another 5th grade mom, when she casually asked if Miss M was one of the girls invited to the "group" movie night.

I told the mom no. She sighed a sigh of motherly relief - her daughter was not invited either.

It seems there are certain girls and boys in the 5th grade who go on group movie dates. It is unclear as to whether any parents attend the movie along with the kids or not.

Either way, I am really glad Miss M is not invited. Even if she were invited I would not allow her to go.

This seems too much like a "date" to me. Who cares if it is 3 girls and 3 boys? It is still a 1:1 boy/girl ratio.

The other mom commented to me that in talking with moms, the general impression is that - as a group - what could happen? They had not told their daughters or sons they could not go on dates (who would think to discuss an appropriate dating age by 10?!)

We have always - from as early as I can remember - commented in passing to Miss M that she will not date until she is 32, or 25, or 18.

She shows no interest in boys (other than Nick Jonas - but we've all had a little celebrity crush)

These same girls are also dressing to the nine's to go see the boys play in their baskball games.

So, while I have nothing to worry about right now - Miss M shows no interest in boys, we've discussed how her body is a gift from God and needs to always be treated with respect, and have commented with more definition now that dating is not allowed until she is at least 16 - 18 - my question is this:

Am I out of the loop? Is this a growing trend? What would you do?

I personally think all kids today are growing up way too fast. We still limit what our kids watch on TV, what they are allowed to listen to, go to church, talk to our kids, and have final say in what is worn out of the house.

Am I alone in this? What are your thoughts?

I'm really having a hard time grasping how other moms, of girls in a Catholic School, are okay with their 10 and 11 year old daughters going out on group dates with boys. Whether or not an adult is along.

(And I am oh so glad Miss M is not really friends with any of these girls)

Snow Day Fun

The weathermen actually got it right this time - well, sort of. We did get some snow - about 2-3". Not the 4-8" they were calling for.

But enough to cancel school for the day.

Miss M and Drewby were thrilled! After breakfast, the kids begged hubby to run to the local dollar store and get 2-3 spray bottles. As hubby had just gotten home from work, the truck was cleaned off already and warm - he obliged the kiddos.

We filled the bottles with cold water and added food coloring to make "snow paint".

The kiddos grabbed a variety of containers, bundled up and out they went.

They made some very unique "snow castles" which they painted a variety of colors.

After about an hour, they were cold and wet. So in they came for "snowman soup" AKA hot chocolate with marshmallows.

All in all, it was a good day.

Miss M completed enough activities to earn her Frosty Fun girl scout badge.

Drewby was just happy to have snow to play in.

And I can walk again! (see yesterday's post for details!)

What Was I Thinking?!

So, I've decided to start using the free 30-day trial membership at a local gym. Both hubby and I got a free 30-day trial after booking Drewby's 7th birthday party.

I guess dropping that kind of money on a party has some perks.

Hubby started going last week. Went to a "Studio Cycling" class. Said it was good.

(He was walking - and sitting - just fine after the class last week)

So I went to the class along with him today. What was I thinking?!

Have I mentioned I haven't really worked out, exercised, or rode a bike in quite some time?

And that I am somewhat overweight?

So now, 9 hours after the class ended, I. Can. Not. Walk.

Or sit.

But I am choosing to focus on the positive (one of my New Year goals) - I did pedal through the entire 50-minute class. With some resistance on the pedals. (Although I didn't do much of the standing pedaling in class)

And I felt pretty good right afterward. Now - not so much!

Lucky for me, the next class I could take is next Tuesday. Hopefully by then I will be able to sit. And walk.

On a side note - I did re-emphasize to my kids tonight the importance of staying in shape and taking care of our bodies.

Because getting our bodies back into shape is a long - and painful - process. But getting out of shape took some time as well - it just wasn't as painful.

Hi. My Name is Brenda. I have a Problem.

Maybe you can guess what my problem is.

Go ahead. Look to my sidebar and - take a wild guess.

You got it. I am finally able to admit, I am entranced by the Twilight series.

I picked up the first book Twilight, sometime before Thanksgiving just to see what all the hype was about. Plus it was on sale for $4.99 and I figured I could donate it to the library when I tired of it. (which I was sure would be very quickly)

I read the entire book in like 2 nights. Long, long, sleepless nights. (Lucky for me hubby works nights so I wasn't keeping him awake)

I then went to see the movie with my mom who loves vampire movies. She was dissappointed as she wanted a scary vampire movie. Not me. I was kind of dissappointed in some of the liberties the director took in changing some things too much - but I still loved the movie.

I then used a B&N gift card I had received to purchase the second book, and again, was more and more drawn into this tangle, impossible love affair.

Then came the third book. I actually waited the two weeks til Christmas to read the fourth book because I knew hubby was getting it for me.

And now I find out that in a little under one year, I will get to see the second movie. With a new director (yeah!)

Plus the Twilight DVD comes out in just over 2 months. With extra scenes and extended scenes. I.Can.Not.Wait!

Oh, did I mention I have now read the first book a second time, and am waiting for my New Moon book to be returned to me for more reading?

Can any other moms out there relate to this series? I know its meant for the teen/young adult audience, but I just find the draw between Edward and Bella to be so strong and intricate.

I think I may need some new reading suggestions...maybe try to tame this addiction.

Til next time, I'll still be (reading the Twilight series and....)

I Really Don't Like Weathermen, or Weatherwomen

So, it's happened again.

We started out with expected snowfall of 3 - 6 inches from this "storm". And we were under that "Winter Storm Warning" category.

Last night - after posting - I saw we were lowered in total to 2-4 inches. Okay, I can still watch my kids have fun in 2-4 inches of snow. And we were still in the "Winter Storm Warning" category.

But this is the final straw.

We have been officially lowered to a "Winter Weather Adivsory", with total accumulations of 1-3 inches of snow before the precipitation changes to freezing rain. And Mr. Weatherman thinks most of the viewing area will fall into the 1 inch range.

I don't know about you, but 1 inch of snow is not really anything my kids get excited about. They would prefer not going through all the hassle of putting on thermals, pants, and snowpants, turtleneck, sweathshirt and heavy coat, hat gloves, boots and scarves for only 1 lousy inch of snow!!

So, I have decided we need to move. To a more northern location, a higher elevation or something.

Now I just need to convince hubby.

Til next time, I'll still be...

Anticipation

Our house is sitting on pins and needles. (No - not pine needles, although our tree really needs to come down tomorrow!)

The kids and I are waiting - not so patiently - for the first accumulating snowfall in our area. It's totally NOT that I love snow, or enjoy being out in it, but I DO enjoy watching my kids play together in the snow, and taking pictures of them, then watching them light up seeing me bring out a steaming hot pot of homemade hot cocoa.

And this winter we have had several occassions we were teased with the possibility of snow. Instead it either skirted around us - or changed to an ice or rain event.

So the weathermen (yes, plural as I have watched 3 separate stations predictions for this event) are all telling me our area should recieve 3-6 inches of snow overnight and into tomorrow.

Now I know for some of you that is no big deal.

But for my kids - that will be good enough to run around, make snow angels, have a snowball fight, and possibly - just possibly get out the sled and visit "the hill".

"The hill" is this very steep hill by the local school where all the neighborhood kids go to sled. The last time it snowed here enough to sled was, I think, two-three years ago. I remember because Drewby wasn't big enough to make it all the way to the top. I don't think Miss M could climb all the way either. So they climbed to the halfway point, hopped on their sled, and down they came.

So we have fingers and toes crossed that for this once, the weathermen are right, and we will have some snow on the ground tomorow.

Til next time, I'll still be...

It's Official!

Miss M has the date set to get her braces.

Well, at least the beginning phase of her braces.

Back in October, Miss M and I went into the orthodontist's office for a consultation. After several photos of Miss M and a few x-rays, I am told the doctor will be right in.

When the orthodontist comes in, the first thing she does is show me the photos they took of Miss M's teeth and profile. She points out that Miss M's chin is set back too far - leading to her significant overbite and offset front teeth. (For the last 10 1/2 years I - and Miss M - have been blissfully unaware of this "abnormality" in her development.)

After many questions, and several explanations, I am presented with the summary of proposed treatment for Miss M.

For the first 12 months - she will have braces on her four top and four bottom front teeth. Her side teeth will have this:

This is a Herbst appliance meant to correct her overbite. It does not look pleasant.

Then after the Herbst appliance is removed, she will have 18 months of traditional orthodontic treatment.

And when is all this is being placed in her mouth? Thursday, April 9th at 8:10am. Holy Thursday. You know, three days before Easter - before she is thinking she will be getting a basket of candy - like every other year. Not this year.

She will be limited in what she can eat for the first week - only soft foods - scrambled eggs, yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, etc.

We have to wait until April because, get this, based upon a hand and wrist x-ray, that is when Miss M will begin a growth spurt. Don't. Ask. Me. I have no idea how they came to that conclussion, but timing is good. She should not miss a day of school, because as a Catholic school, Miss M has off Thursday, Friday, and Monday for Easter Break.

As I tell Miss M this bit of news, she sits quietly. Then she states, quite matter of factly, "Mom, do you know Taylor Swift got her braces done at the same place I'm getting mine on?" Nope. Had no clue.

She either saw something on their Wall of Fame when we were there, or was told by one of the multitude of students at her school who also go to the same orthodontist. Taylor Swift is originally from our area, and one of Miss M and her friends fave's.

I guess my baby girl won't miss the candy so much after all.

Although she did ask for a giant bag of Swedish Fish next time I go to Sam's Club. Just to get her fill before she cannot have them anymore.

Til next time, I'll still be...

Happy New Year!

Welcome 2009!

Every new year starts out the same way in our house - New Year's Eve at home with the kids and a feast of seafood, watching the ball drop in NYC, and then bundling up and standing outside watching out cities fireworks display. New Year's Day - it's a feast of pork and sauerkraut, football, and high hopes for keeping the resolutions we make.

Well this year, I think I can finally keep my resolution!

I did not make one!!

I mean - I did not totally abandon all hope for change in 2009.

I did however, decide to set goals - goals which will help be become more focused, more organized, and a healthier and stronger person - in both mind, body and soul.

Another goal I set is to keep up with my blog - and since it is only January 6th - I figure that is a pretty good start after an almost 6 week absence.

One may ask "So what's the difference between Resolutions and Goals?"

Good Question.

To me the difference is this: a resolution is so firm, so steadfast. It is not something meant to be changed or fluctuate.

A goal is a step toward something. It is something to be reviewed periodically and adjusted as necessary.

Thus - why I have set goals. Mentally, once I break a resolution there is no way to change it. With a goal, if I fall a little short - it is a chance to step back and look at why I didn't achieve the goal and rewrite it better.

Just my two cents on the difference.

Turkeys and Toes

So tomorrow is Thanksgiving.

This is our year to spend with hubby's family. All 40 or so extended family members - aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

The great thing is - we get to see family we haven't seen in a long time.

The drawback to that is - they go out to eat at a true Pennsylvania Dutch Family Restaurant.

Turkey, sausage, ham, potatoe filling, dried corn, boiled sweet potatoes, and homemade applesauce and pies. (That last part is my favorite part of the meal)

Miss M has been questioning hubby about why his family doesn't cook. She wants REAL food, or so she says. See Miss M has finicky tastebuds. She doesn't eat turkey unless it is really moist white meat, without gravy. (No such luck for that at this restaurant)

She will only eat real MASHED potatoes - no filling with celery and onions for her (that would be eating veggies!)

And the dried corn - well one word sums that up - YUCK!

And she is not a pie person. At All.

Add to the fact, we eat with the family as noon - and she wanted to know how we were going to have any leftovers - since she will be hungry by 5 or 6pm and the restaurant does not do doggie bags.

Well, crockpot to the rescue!

I have decided I am cooking a turkey in my crockpot while we are out with the family. I can make the mashed potatoes, and CANDIED yams, and real corn once we get home. Along with biscuits and gravy. Not a Traditional Thanksgiving meal, but a meal we will be Thankful for - with leftovers too!

Miss M is very THANKFUL about having a second chance at Thanksgiving Dinner.

Now you may be asking yourself - where do Toes come into this post.

Well....in all my poise and grace, I stumbled (or actually fell) down the last three steps in our house yesterday morning. In my socked feet. As I was on my way out the door - after I was able to see straight - I shoved my foot into a pair of shoes and went on my merry way.

I was babysitting my nephew while my brother-in-law and his wife had an ultrasound of their twins. I took my shoes off when I got to their house. And kept them off for 2-3 hours.

I couldn't get the one back on. At. All.

I hobbled out to my van and drove home. Took off my shoes and socks, and guess what greeted me? An ugly, swollen, black and blue toe. 4th toe, right foot. (Yes, driving home was quite uncomfortable)

So I called my foot doctor and he could see me today. So in I went, along with Miss M and Drewby, because they were off from school.

3 x-rays and an exam later - it has been decided my toe is NOT broken. It is badly sprained with a torn ligament.

In other words, more painful than a broken toe.

So, I have been hobbling around with one sneaker on and one slipper on - because no shoe will fit over my toe.

Oh, and please recall I have hubby's 20th year reunion this weekend. Yeah right. I am really hoping the swelling goes down so I can at least get my foot into a pair of heels to walk into the reunion, and slip out of them once I sit down.

I can hope anyway.

But I will enjoy my Thanksgiving - both dinners, and the time with family.

I hope you all have a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving.

Til next time, I'll still be...

Tree Competition

Healthy competition is a good thing, right?

The school hosted a Holiday Breakfast with Santa over the weekend, and it raised almost $3,000 for the school. YEAH!

One of the decorations was that each grade had a Christmas tree to decorate as it chose. Drewby is in 1st Grade and Miss M is in 5th Grade. All in all there were 10 trees decorated by kids in grade Pre-School through 8th Grade.

All of the trees were absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

And each patron to the breakfast received a ticket to vote for their favorite tree.

Well, Drewby's class decided - with some help from some moms - to do a "Visions of Sugar Plums" tree. It was all decked out in CANDY. Real Candy Canes, candy canes the kids made from licorice and mini-marshmallows, gumdrop balls, applesauce-cinnamon cut-outs, glass ornaments filled with Skittles, Nerds, Sweet Tarts, and a hand-made gingerbread man as a topper! Then each 1st grader made two ornaments from a sugar, water, and glitter mixture, which once hardened - one was hung on the tree and the other will be a gift for the nuns at the Villa.

Miss M's 5th Grade class decided on a Natural Tree. They dried orange and apple slices, covered pine cones with peanut butter and birdseed, strung popcorn and cranberries, and filled in with poinsettias and berry sprays. Their tree SMELLED wonderful and looked professionally done. (I am SO glad the teacher steered them toward this idea because one of the other ideas were a Video Game tree)

Well, the votes were counted, and the results are in. Drewby's grade won with 120 votes. The prize, a Pizza Party in class!

Miss M's class came in 2nd place with 93 votes.

I am VERY happy I was a volunteer working at this breakfast and not an attendee - I would have only had one vote and not been able to choose between the two!

My kids are not yet aware of the results. I know my kids love each other - but they are both certain that their tree was the best. And, as siblings often do, they have a competitive streak between them.

SO - I am hoping the school waits until AFTER Thanksgiving break to tell the students the results.

How Quickly Time Flies

Hello again!

I cannot believe I've been away from BloggyLand for SOOOO Long!

We've had quite an interesting 6 weeks or so.

I'd love to write about it all, but there is just no way - so I will highlight for you:

Halloween was uneventful - my Darth Vader and Rennaissance Princess trekked around the neighborhood with DH and I stayed put to hand out candy.

We found out Miss M not only needs braces - but needs this strange contraption called a Herbst Device placed in her mouth. More on that in a separate post.

Hubby started a new position with his current employer. He is now working a "normal" shift - permanent 3rd shift: Sunday - Thursday nights 10:45pm - 6:45am. This is a good thing - but has taken some adjusting to.

I have successfully made it through yet another HUGE school fundraiser - we served over 600 breakfasts this morning.

And finally - back full circle from where I last left off - Drewby is sick again. I can hear the doctor now...Back to the ENT specialist for another set of tubes in the ears! (I really hope not)

Anyway - I am hoping to be back on-line and posting and checking in with all of you on a more regular basis now.

Til next time, I'll still be....

Weekend Recap in 90 Seconds or Less

Friday night was movie night as Drewby was sick.

Saturday was football and more football as Drewby's team played in the morning (yes, even sick he went and played - he had no fever) and Miss M had to cheer for her team that evening.

Saturday afternoon - we went to Mass, as we were going away all day Sunday.

Drewby had a rough time at the evening game - the cool air hurt his ear.

Dinner with friends and their kids after the game - Table for 9 please!

Sunday was spent at the Renaissance Faire with Lizzie and Kiki.

The kids had a great time hanging out with (mom and dad) Nana and Kiki.

Here's some fun highlights from the day - Drewby and Miss M were properly trained by a squire and wench as to how to greet the Queen, Drewby was knighted by the Queen, Miss M learned Peasant Dances, and we all cheered "God Save The Queen"- in our best British accents - way too many times!

We also all ate (drank) way too much food (beer/wine)! (More on this day in another post)

Monday was a day off school - and a lazy day to rest from Sunday's walking, walking, and more walking.

Other than that - it was a pretty normal weekend!

This Was My Day

Let me tell you about my last few mornings.

Hubby has been working nights, so he has come home and gone right to bed in the morning.

This has meant I am getting both kids up, dressed, ready, fed and out the door for school - all by 7:40am.

Not typically a big deal. I've done this many, many times before.

(Now would be a good time to mention that during ALL of last school year, Miss M had perfect attendance and Drewby missed only two days with a stomach bug.)

So, Wednesday morning I go in to wake Drewby at the typical 6:30am.

He was so not in a good morning mood (which he typically is - he's my morning child)

There was fussing, and crying, and pulling the covers up over his head.

There was foot stomping, and more crying.

I. Was. Not. Happy. (nor was I the model mommy that morning - there was some yelling)

Finally - at 7:25am I had him ready for school.

Didn't leave me too much time to get him a good breakfast though.

Luckily, Miss M had stepped up and managed to get herself ready, hair brushed and pulled back, and ate something for breakfast - toaster strudel I think.

Wednsday night - bedtime was moved up to 8:00pm from 8:30 to try and compensate for his hard morning and hope it didn't happen again.

I should also mention - he was a little sniffly the last few days.

No fever. No whining. No complaining.

Just some nose-blowing, and maybe a cough, cough here or there.

So this morning I go in to wake Drewby around 6:30am.

Once again, he is uncooperative. Covers over head.

Crying. Lying on the floor.

I finally get him into the bathroom.

His eyes are red and puffy underneath. And not from crying.

And the nose-blowing continues.

But still no fever.

Another not so great morning.

But he goes to school today. I call the doctor's office and "he should be seen" is what they tell me.

So I pick Drewby and Miss M up from school early and head to the doctor's office.

Well, no wonder he has been Mr. Miserable in the morning!

He has a sinus infection and a full-blown ear infection. So much so, that the doctor invites me to look through the little scope thing-y to see the infected ear drum.

I. Am. A. Terrible. Mom.

He had none of those classic symptoms like when he was a baby and had ear infections.

No fever. No crying. No screams when lying down.

He never even said anything hurt.

I guess I am a little out of practice on the sick child front.

Then, to make my day even better, the doctor's office has this new (at least to me - remember no sick kids for the last 15 months - at least) electronic way to send prescriptions to the pharmacy.

The doc tells me that his 4 - yes, 4 - prescriptions are sent and will be waiting for me to pick up.

So, I bring the kids home to start homework.

And me, being me, decides to call the pharmacy and check on the 'scrips.

After pushing many buttons, I finally get a live person (although I didn't get her name - this will be important later).

Yes, the 'scrips are there and will be ready around 6pm.

Now, Miss M had cheerleading practice tonight, and as hubby is working - Drewby had to tag along. (Drewby also had football practice, and participated in some things but not all)

After practice - 7:30pm - we head to the pharmacy to pick up the 'scrips.

I hit the drive thru - you know, because it is me and two, tired kids.

Here's the conversation with the pharmacy tech:

PT: "Name"

Me:"Drewby"

After a bit of time looking
PT:"When did you drop it off?"

Me:"It was sent electronically around 3:30pm"

PT"We don't have any 'scrips for that name here"

Me:"I called to find out a time for pick up and was told yes the 'scrips were here and they would be ready by 6pm"

PT: (clearly annoyed) "Who did you talk to?"

Me: "I didn't get a name - it was a woman"

PT:"Please wait."

After a good 3-4 minutes the pharmacist comes to the window.

Yes she remembers seeing the 'scrips come in, someone asking when they would be ready by and telling them 90 minutes.

But they are nowhere now - would I mind waiting for about 10-15 minutes for the 'scrips to be reprocessed and prepared?

Would I mind - yes!

Did I have a choice - No!

So the kids and I park, go inside and wait. And wait.

We finally got home around 8:15pm.

And now, Drewby has a fever. Low grade, but still a fever.

Drewby took his medicine and went straight to bed. After blowing his nose for like 10 minutes straight.

I guess Drewby will not be getting perfect attendance this year either.

There is still hope for Miss M and another perfect attandance award...the doctor gave them both their flu shots today while we were there!

Til next time, I'll still be...

And the Votes Are In!

So yesterday was Election Day at the kid's school.

All children heard speeches on Monday from the upper class mates running for Student Government President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

In their own classrooms, each candidate had to give a short speech about why they would make the best classroom rep to Student Government.

Miss M and Drewby both gave their campaigns their best effort.

Votes were cast on Tuesday and results were announced this morning.

At pick up this afternoon...the looks on their faces said it all.

Drewby and Miss M were both defeated by other students.

Miss M took the loss in stride...this was (after all) her 5th attempt at a Representative spot.

Drewby took the loss a little bit harder.

But he was pleased with the little girl who won for his classroom.

I was also very proud of Miss M.

She clapped for the winner of her class and made it a point to personally go over and congratulate her after the announcement.

Miss M actually seemed a bit shocked the other losing candidates did not do this.

Miss M is really growing into quite a young woman.

She has her moments when she shows us through her actions and words, that for the last 10 1/2 years she has been listening, and paying attention to know what is the right thing to do in situations.

It does appear that next year, Miss M will not be running for office again.

After 5 years, she is (finally) abandoning her political aspirations.

Drewby on the other hand, made it a point in the van to talk about how he will change his campaign for next year.

And how he hopes a certain little girl is NOT in his class next year!

At least we have a year to prepare....not that I am that organized!

Til next time, I'll still be...

A Final Celebration

As I celebrate my anniversary with my husband, we have been shocked into a reality we have not yet had to deal with.

My friend's husband passed away yesterday, after complications from the heart surgery.

She will now spend what would have been his 42nd birthday, celebrating his life one final time as she buries him.

She will not have the opportunity to celebrate their marriage again, as their anniversary would have been next week.

Instead of preparing for what should have been a week of birthday and anniversary celebrations, she is trying to figure out many other things.

Things my hubby and I have not really talked about.

Life insurance...where are the policies, how much, what terms.

Health insurance...how much longer will the kids be covered before having to get alternate insurance?

Mortgage insurance...do we have it? Is the mortgage paid off in this event?

Car payments...how much is still owed? What is the resale value?

Bank accounts, investment accounts...how many, where are they, passwords, value?

So while I celebrate with my husband, we both realize that there are things we need to discuss and prepare for.

While I am not looking forward to these discussions, I know they must be had. And I know, that should something happen to either one of us...it will help the other one of us get through an already difficult time.

Til next time, I'll still be...

To My Husband

Today, hubby and I celebrate 13 years of marriage.

There are times it feels like we have been together forever...and other times it seems like it cannot be 13 years already.

In celebration of this anniversary, I would like to take this time to list 13 things I love about my hubby.

1. He makes me laugh. Everyday.

2. He believes in me, even when I don't believe in myself.

3. He is a hard worker, and good provider.

4. His personality shines - brightly when needed, and allows me to shine as well.

5. His hugs....strong, close, and warm.

6. He is a wonderful father to our children.

7. His patience - with me, the kids, and life.

8. He gives more of himself than I could ever ask. From working with Miss M on math homework before he leaves for work, volunteering time to coach Drewby's football team to helping around the house when I am consumed with my depression/anxiety or volunteer duties.

9. His positive outlook on life (I could use some of that to rub off on me!)

10. He can cook!

11. He knows what little things mean the most to me...from foot rubs and back stratching to chocolate and sleeping in.

12. He accepts me as I am....whether my anxiety and depression are in full force, or under control.

And last, but certainly not least,

13. He loves me....unconditionally and totally, through all the good and bad times we've had....and all that are yet to come.

So, as I celebrate 13 years of marriage to this wonderful man of my dreams, I want to thank him...for all the things listed above, and all the things I haven't listed.

Thank you for the last 13 years of marriage, for giving me two wonderful children, and for all the little gifts, and large sacrifices.

I love you honey, and always will.

Til next time, I'll still be...

Happily married, and
